In my storyboard, i mentioned that i would have shots of newspaper clippings and news reports from the past, this clip/shot will last approximatley last 5-10 seconds. I have started to research clips from films which contain this technique that i would like to use this, from doing this I could make my product (s) resemble currently on the market.
Clip 1: This is England.
This is England was produced in 2007 and focuses on the anti social behavior within Britain in the 1980's. After watching the introduction of the film in class, i have decided to do a breakdown analysis with this clip as i think that the methods that are used in this introduction are effective and introduces the film in many contexts. The music performance, which can tell us the social trends.
Sets the social class for the film. Skin heads normally being associated with a low status in the social hierarchy, this is portrayed from the blog of council flats.
A royal wedding can also highlight the era that is being showed, and could be a important social event, that could change people's view, make them act in a certain way etc.
The social unrest of the decade. Could be a reaction to the trade unions, strikes, high unemployment or one of the rebellions to Thatcher's reforms.
These shots containing the army, suggest that this time period is one which of war/outbreak and peoples moods and opinions can also be depicted as some citizens in one shot are holding the Great Britain flag, additionally the background seems to be a street in london, which portrays this event to be a main and publicized one within history.
This shot conveys the attitudes towards certain things in society, as the asian man is standing in the corner this could be interpreted as the attitudes towards immigration and foreign citizens, living in england.
The shot of Margret Thatcher, is also another shot that can highlight the era, as will can see that within the 80's Thatcher was an important figure in politics, having this shot the viewer is able to identify what date it is in the film.
I decided to keep this breakdown brief as this technique will only appear for a maximum of 5 seconds within my teaser trailer. When breaking this clip down I thought it was amazing in that in nearly 3 and a half minutes the viewer is presented with a picture of the story, political agenda, society, reforms, social events, moods, attitudes and opinions within the given epoch through historical footage. When using this in my own teaser trailer i would like to include historical as well as up to date footage on murders and news reports of criminal acts, as by doing this it indicated a negative turning point within the protagonists life. When doing this i will consider getting clips/footage with the same camera shots/angles/movements as the ones in this clip, i.e establishing shots, to show the locations and how they were, mid close ups and long shots so the viewer can look at the fashion and clothing that the people are wearing, another technique that could be used to illustrate the time, Close ups to show peoples emotions etc. And over the shoulder shots and P.O.V shots to add more of a personal effect to the film. After finding the footage that will be used in my film, i will post in it my blog and evaluate it, stating my reasons for choosing this and how I will use it. Lastly another technique that i am considering using is me filming the news etc and taking pictures of collages that i have created, by using all different newspaper clippings and articles, this will be flashed up quickly in my teaser trailer so the viewer will comprehend them subliminally (i will later do a blog on Subliminal messages that are used psychological thriller teaser trailers and how they affect the viewer.)
